MIDDLETOWN — The Naugatuck girls swim team wrapped up the season with a 17th-place finish at the Class L championship meet at Wesleyan University Nov. 20.

The Greyhounds, armed with one of the smallest teams in the meet, tallied 80 points. Darien won the championship with 778 points.

The Naugatuck 200 medley relay foursome of Molly Kennelly, Haley Deller, Kelly Brodeur and Ayana Williams finished 16th in 2:07.31.

It was another 16th-place finish (1:53.06) for the 200 freestyle relay squad of Emily Sarmiento, Meghan Korowotny, Kayla Bartlett and Williams.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Abby Shugdinis, Alena Rotatori, Kennelly and Deller placed 18th (4:11.11).

In the individual events, Deller placed 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.57). Williams finished 17th finish in the 50 freestyle (26.21) and 23rd in the 100 freestyle (59.64).

Naugatuck will graduate Kennelly, Korowotny and Sarmiento, but will return a talented core of younger swimmers who will look to improve on this year’s third place standing at the Naugatuck Valley League championship.

Juniors Katelyn Fortney and Shugdinis will lead next year’s group along with sophomores Deller, Brodeur, Bartlett, Jacqueline Uva, Davinity Smallwood and Emily Meyer.

Naugy coach Jim McKee will also be looking for freshmen Lauren Litke, Rachel Pinho and Williams to strengthen the lineup, and to add some new young swimmers next year to bolster to the squad.
