Greyhounds, Hawks advance in states

The Naugatuck and Woodland boys and girls soccer teams all advanced to the second round of their respective state tournaments.

Boys soccer

No. 4 Naugatuck defeated No. 29 Crosby, 3-0, in the first round of the Class LL tournament Monday at Naugatuck High School.

Simon Diaz, Mateus Filho and Chris Akinduro all scored for the Greyhounds (17-1-2). Bruno Silva, Fred Longo and Timmy Rosa each had an assist, and David Green made six saves in goal.

Naugatuck will host No. 13 New Milford Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the second round.

No. 4 Woodland beat No. 29 Norwich Tech, 5-0, in the first round of the Class M tournament Monday at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls.

Devon Polletta led the Hawks (17-3) with two goals. Sean Hussey, Jason Claiborn and Luca Cambra added goals for Woodland. Dante Polletta, Nathaniel Smith, Hussey and Claiborn recorded assists, and D.J. Mulligan made one save in goal.

Woodland will host No. 13 Northwestern Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the second round.

Girls soccer

No. 13 Woodland defeated No. 20 Immaculate, 3-1, in the first round of the Class M tournament on a cold and windy day Tuesday at Woodland Regional High School.

Aries Bell, Paige Letourneau and Sara Alessio each scored for Woodland (11-4-3). Jillian O’Neil and Jenna Mierek had assists. Isa Mejias made six saves in goal for the Hawks.

Woodland will visit No. 4 Weston on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the second round.

No. 14 Naugatuck rolled past No. 19 Rockville, 5-0, in the first round of the Class L tournament Tuesday at Naugatuck High.

Aalyiah Henry led the Greyhounds (10-5-3) with three goals. Paige Cruz and Emma Sonski each had a goal, and Noelle Jacobi, Angelina Oliveira, Alissa McNeil and Lauren Sonski had assists. Sydney O’Donnell made three saves in goal and Saige Winslow had one for Naugy.

Naugatuck will head play No. 3 Pomperaug on the road Thursday at 5 p.m. in the second round.
