NEW BRITAIN — The Naugatuck and Woodland outdoor track and field teams were represented by several athletes at the State Open June 3 at Willow Brook Park.

Naugatuck senior Zachary Koslosky earned the top performance among the Greyhounds and Hawks, placing third in the pole vault at 14 feet to qualify for the first time for the New England championship meet, which is Saturday at the Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.

“I feel I could have done better,” said Koslosky who won the Naugatuck Valley League and Class L pole vault championships. “However, I’m happy with my performance.”

“This will be my first time competing at the New England championship and not knowing what to expect will be the biggest challenge I will face,” Koslosky added.

Naugatuck head coach Ralph Roper said Koslosky is poised to do well at the New England championships.

“Zach is a fierce, competitive and savvy competitor,” Roper said.

Naugatuck freshman Allison Murphy finished 11th in the 800 meters in 2 minutes and 20.04 seconds at the State Open, beating her second-place time of 2:20.90 at NVLs and her fourth-place time of 2:20.56 at the Class L meet.

The Naugy girls 4×100 relay team of Alyssa Zarrella, Rachel Huculak, Paige Cruz and Kylie Neretich ran a 51.96 to finish 26th, beating their second-place NVL time of 52.03 and Class L fifth-place time of 52.31.

The Woodland girls track team sent a trio of athletes to the State Open.

Junior Jasmine Michie placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet and 2 3/4 inches. Michie, who won the NVL shot put championship, finished 2 1/2 inches out of the scoring at the meet, but set a new school record with the throw.

Sophomore Jaden Young finished 14th in the 800 meters in 2:23.02, beating her third-place time of 2:25.40 at NVLs. Young previously set a new school record of 2:20.07 to take fifth at the Class M meet.

Junior Emma Slavin placed 17th in the 3200 in 11:41.97, beating her second-place time of 11:55.78 at NVLs.
