NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck golf team may not be where they want to be at this point in the season, but that hasn’t stopped the Greyhounds from battling on the links.

The Greyhounds (3-9) won’t make the field of eight teams for the Naugatuck Valley League championship match May 30, but they will be represented.

“We won’t make the final cut,” Naugatuck head coach Peter Kovalski said. “But we will have a couple of boys going. Ryan Hunt, who has put up our best scores this season, will be going. Then it’s between Joe Macary and Derek McGrath. One of those two will go, it all comes down to how well they do in the last four matches and we will send the best two averages to the NVL championship.”

“Meghan Korowotny and Liz Kilmer will represent Naugatuck in the girls championship,” he added.

Naugatuck dropped a 182-234 decision to Torrington at Hop Brook Golf Course on May 14. Hunt led the way with a 47 and McGrath was right behind him with a solid 52. Kilmer checked in with a 67 and Zach Crosswait finished at 68.

The match followed a 193-221 loss to Seymour May 9 at Hop Brook. Macary shot a 49 to lead Naugatuck, followed by Hunt (51), McGrath (58) and Crosswait (63).

“It’s been a tough season,” Kovalski said. “Between all the rain and the postponements, it’s been a little difficult to gain some consistency.

“I think as a team we tend to look at the match as a whole and allow one bad hole to affect our final score. We need to stay focused in the here and now, and take it one hole, one shot at a time. Even if we can take one shot off each hole, that’s nine shots per match and that can make a huge difference in the final outcome.”

Naugatuck is scheduled to play Watertown on Monday, Wolcott on Wednesday and St. Paul on Friday. The Greyhounds conclude the regular season May 28 at the Orange Country Club against on O’Brien Tech of Ansonia.
