The postseason is in full swing on the basketball court.

The No. 8-seeded Naugatuck girls defeated No. 25 Avon, 39-27, Monday in the first round of the Class L state tournament.

Sarah Wisniewski scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Greyhounds. Kaylee Jackson added 10 points.

Naugatuck (17-6) will host No. 9 Bristol Eastern (14-7) in the second round on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. A win will put Naugatuck into the quarterfinal round with games set for March 4.

After winning the final regular season game to clinch a postseason berth, the No. 33-seeded Woodland girls lost in a Class M qualifying game to No. 32 Amistad, 41-39, on Feb. 22.

Gabby Mastropietro led Woodland with 14 points. Jillian Barbarito recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks.

The fields are set for the boys’ state tournaments.

Naugatuck, which fell 90-74 to Crosby in the Naugatuck Valley League quarterfinals on Feb. 23, is the No. 6 seed in the Division III tournament and earned a first-round bye.

The Greyhounds (15-6) will host the winner of a first-round game between No. 11 Newtown (14-6) and No. 22 Capital Prep (8-12) on March 7 at 7 p.m.

In the NVL tournament against Crosby, John Lukau led Naugatuck with 27 points. Gawayne Fisher had 16 and Derrick Jagello added 12.

The Woodland boys won four of their last five games to earn a spot in the Division IV tournament.

The Hawks (8-12) are seeded 27th and will play at No. 6 Ellington (16-4) on March 4 at 7 p.m. in the first round.
