Naugy girls, Woodland volleyball on to quarterfinals

For the first time in nine years, the Naugatuck girls soccer team will play in a state quarterfinal match.

The No. 9-ranked Greyhounds defeated No. 25 Bristol Central, 3-1, on Wednesday to advance to the Class L quarterfinals. Emma Sonski, Angelina Oliveira and Lily Lyons scored goals for Naugy. Alissa McNeil dished out one assist, and Sydney O’Donnell had seven saves.

Naugatuck will host No. 16 Farmington on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 13 Daniel Hand and No. 12 Pomperaug in the semifinals early next week.

The Woodland volleyball team also has the semifinals in sight.

The No. 12 Hawks beat No. 5 Waterford in the second round of the Class M tournament to advance to the quarterfinals. Woodland dropped the first two games before rallying for a 3-2 (20-25, 15-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-7) win.

Woodland will host No. 13 Montville on Friday at 6 p.m. The winner will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 1 Seymour and No. 8 St. Joseph in the semifinals on Tuesday.

The Woodland and Naugatuck boys soccer teams are looking to reach the quarterfinals as well.

No. 9 Woodland beat No. 24 Aerospace, 2-1, on Wednesday in the first round of the Class M boys tournament. Maciej Lewicki and Joshua Powanda each scored goals for the Hawks.

The Hawks will play at No. 8 Windham today at 5 p.m. in the second round. The winner will play the winner of the second-round match between No. 1 Ellington and No. 16 Windham Tech on Saturday.

No. 11 Naugatuck, which beat No. 22 Newtown in the first round on Tuesday, will play at No. 6 Danbury today in the second round of the Class LL boys soccer tournament. The winner will play the winner of the second-round match between No. 3 Fairfield Prep and No. 19 East Hartford on Saturday.
