State tourneys starting up

First-round action of the state tournaments gets underway today in girls soccer and volleyball.

Naugatuck (10-4-3) earned the No. 9 seed in the Class L girls soccer tournament and will host No. 24 Avon (6-9-1) at 2 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the first-round match between No. 8 Bullard Havens (10-3-1) and No. 25 Bristol Central (6-9-1) in the second round on Wednesday.

Woodland (9-5-4) is the No. 17 seed in the Class M girls soccer tournament and will head to No. 16 Northwestern (9-5-2) for a match at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to play No. 1 Lewis Mills (16-0), which has a first-round bye, in the second round on Wednesday.

In volleyball, Woodland (15-6) is the No. 12 seed in the Class M state tournament and will host No. 21 Kaynor Tech (10-10) at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to play No. 5 Waterford (14-3), which has a first-round bye, in the second round on Wednesday.

Naugatuck (14-7) earned the No. 15 seed in the Class L tournament and will host No. 18 East Haven (12-6) at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to play No. 2 Barlow (18-1), which has a first-round bye, in the second round on Wednesday.

The first round of the boys state soccer tournaments is set for Tuesday.

Naugatuck (11-4-3) is the No. 11 seed in the Class LL tournament and will host No. 22 Newtown (8-5-3) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The winner will face the winner of the first-round match between No. 6 Danbury (10-1-5) and No. 27 Westhill (7-6-3) in the second round on Thursday.

Woodland (13-3-3) is the No. 9 seed in the Class M state tournament and will host No. 24 Aerospace (8-7-1) at 2 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the first-round match between No. 8 Windham (12-3-1) and No. 25 Sheehan (7-6-3) in the second round on Thursday.
