State tournament play kicked off in earnest on Monday.

No. 9 Naugatuck beat No. 24 Avon, 3-1, in the first round of the Class L girls soccer tournament at Naugatuck High School.

The Greyhounds, who have been knocked out in the first round in three of the last four seasons and didn’t make the postseason in 2016, got two goals from Lilly Lyons and a goal from Alissa McNeil.

“We didn’t want our season to end right now. We had to push ourselves and give it everything we had,” Lyons told the Republican-American.

Sydney O’Donnell made nine saves in goal for Naugatuck, including the save of the game when she raced off her line to block a shot from a streaking Jade Strassner.

“I had to go out there and whatever happened, happened,” O’Donnell told the Republican-American. “If I missed, I missed.”

Naugatuck will host No. 25 Bristol Central on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the second round.

No. 17 Woodland fell to No. 16 Northwester, 2-1, on the road in the first round of the Class M girls soccer tournament.

Julia Casimiro scored for the Hawks, and Alanna Carasone had eight saves.

In volleyball, No. 12 Woodland beat No. 21 Kaynor Tech, 3-0, in the first round of the Class M state tournament at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls.
