The Naugatuck Valley League boys and girls soccer championship tournaments, scheduled to begin on Saturday, have been postponed.

The three-day tournament will now be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The tournament start was delayed due to the pending heavy wind and rain forecast for the area this weekend.

“We felt it would be putting everyone into a bad situation with the weather conditions we are supposed to get on Saturday,” said Holy Cross athletic director Jerry Ciarleglio, the NVL vice president and tournament director. “It would be a terrible day of soccer when it should be the highlight of the season.

“The kids deserve better.”

The NVL volleyball tournament will start on Saturday as scheduled.

The soccer tournament features eight boys and girls teams playing eight first-round matches. The Monday games are at the field of the higher seed. The boys semifinal round on Tuesday are at Crosby High’s Jimmy Lee Stadium at 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., while the girls Tuesday semis are at Watertown’s Mills Complex, same times.

The championship doubleheader is Thursday at Naugatuck High’s Veteran Field, the boys final at 5 p.m. and the girls final 30 minutes after the conclusion of the boys game.

“We will keep our fingers crossed and hope that Monday is a better (weather) day,” Ciarleglio added.
