Tournament run ends for Naugatuck in softball quarterfinals

The Naugatuck softball team’s longest run in the Class L tournament since 2009 came to end last week in the quarterfinals.

The No.-12 seeded Greyhounds lost, 5-2, to No. 13 Jonathan Law on June 1 in a quarterfinal game at Naugatuck High School.

Naugatuck (15-9) got the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout and comebacker to freshman pitcher Brianna Buccitti ended the game.

Law (15-9) got out to a 3-0 lead by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings.

Naugatuck scored its first run on an error off a ball hit by Alyssa Roberts in the fourth. The Greyhounds got to within 3-2 on Aryana Powell’s RBI single later in the inning.

Powell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Julia Pelliccia added a hit and run scored.

Naugatuck rode the leadership of seniors Powell, Pelliccia, Briana Tavares and Taylor Valentine into the quarterfinals, the Greyhounds’ longest run since 2009 when they reached the Class L semifinals. The Greyhounds beat No. 21 Bristol Central, 3-2, in the first round, followed by a 4-2 win over No. 5 Windsor.

“Our seniors will all be missed,” Naugatuck head coach Kevin Wesche, told the Republican-American after the game. “They are all great kids, as well as good athletes.”

Roberts, a freshman, pitched a complete game against Law.

“It’s a relatively young team,” Wesche added. “But they gained some valuable experience.”

Division III golf: The Woodland boys golf team ended the season in the CIAC Division III tournament June 4 at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron. The Hawks shot a combined 390 (+102) to finish 15th out of 20 teams. Killington and East Catholic tied for first with rounds of 309 (+21). Killington won the state championship in a three-hole playoff.

Woodland senior Julian Perino shot a team-best 80, 15th among a field of over 100 golfers. Chris Guerrette (102), Tom Conroy (103) and Josh Hassan (105) rounded out the scoring for Woodland.

Girls tennis State Open: The State Open girls singles and doubles tournaments played out last week.

Woodland’s doubles team of Alanna Carasone and Mia Piccolo won an opening round match, 8-3, over the team of Mackenzie Eaton and Codi Staveski from Woodstock Academy. Carasone and Piccolo lost in the second round, 8-5, to Shepaug Valley’s Taryn Crossley and Rebecca Racz.

Woodland’s Amanda Doughney and the Naugatuck doubles teams of Sabrah Cegelski and Catarina Rego and Brielle Behuniak and Hailey Russell qualified for the open. They all lost opening or first-round matches by default.
