The Naugatuck softball team was a walk-off away from a perfect start to the season.
After opening with consecutive victories, the Greyhounds suffered a 12-11 loss to St. Paul on Sunday afternoon thanks to an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Falcons’ Abby Poirot capped a 5-for-5 day with a two-out RBI triple, which plated an unearned run after an error earlier in the inning.
Naugatuck (2-1) enjoyed a good offensive showing against Poirot, who pitched for the Falcons. Naugy banged out 13 hits, scoring seven earned runs. Alyssa Roberts paced the hitting attack with two doubles and a single, and Julia Pelliccia added three hits.
That loss was the only blemish in an otherwise impressive start for the Greyhounds. After weather delays to start the season, Naugy finally began its slate last Thursday with a 2-1 win over Pomperaug. Megan Schofield cracked a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the fifth to propel the Greyhounds. Roberts twirled a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort, and Hailey Deitelbaum added an RBI single.
Naugy also pummeled Kennedy, 15-0, on Saturday. Roberts tossed a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts, while Schofield once again led the offense with four hits, three runs and an RBI. The Greyhounds also received quality efforts by Alyssa Ulrich (two hits, two runs, two RBI), Pelliccia (two hits, two runs, RBI), and Deitelbaum (hit, two runs, two RBI).
Naugatuck will host Wolcott on Wednesday before embarking on a five-game road trip. That stretch begins Friday at Torrington and continues Monday at Ansonia and next Wednesday at Holy Cross.
Hawks up and down to start: After a season-opening win against Sacred Heart, Woodland dropped its next two games as the hitting attack struggled.
The Hawks (1-2) enjoyed a great opening day last Thursday thanks to Ivy Geloso’s 17-strikeout effort in a 7-2 win over Sacred Heart. She also had two RBI singles. Steph Krebbs had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI with a run, while Liz Triana tacked on three hits.
Woodland only managed three runs over its next two games, though. The Hawks suffered a 5-0 defeat to Brookfield on Saturday despite another good day by Geloso, who had three hits at the plate and struck out nine in the circle. Krebbs added a single and a double.
St. Paul routed Woodland, 13-3, on Monday. Brianna Vallejo led the Hawks with three hits, while Triana tacked on a pair.
Woodland will visit Watertown on Wednesday and host Ansonia on Thursday before visiting Wolcott on Friday. The Hawks will return home Monday to take on Torrington and will visit Oxford next Wednesday.
