NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck boys swim team concluded the season last week by finishing 12th at the Class L meet and then posting close-to-best times to place 35th out of 48 teams at the State Open.

“We had some really good success this year, especially some of the new guys,” Naugatuck head coach Jim McKee said. “A lot of good things happened, like taking runner-up in the league for the third year in a row.”

The Greyhounds put up a team score of 161.5 at last Wednesday’s Class L meet at Wesleyan University. Darien took first with 711 points.

Brian Goggin placed in the top ten in two individual events in Class L. Goggin finished seventh in the 50 freestyle in 22.29, breaking his preliminary time by three-tenths of a second, and eighth in the 100 butterfly time of 55.24, also better than his seeded time.

The 200 medley relay team of Alex Manasoiu, Spencer Maher, Goggin and Zach Alves finished ninth in 1:42.71. The foursome went on to place 22nd at the State Open last Saturday, and Goggin was 17th in the 50 freestyle at the Open.

“We got what we could out of the season we had,” McKee said. “There are a lot of other places behind second (in the NVL). We had a lot of accomplishments, but competing at the state level is always a challenge. Our 4-by-200 medley (relay) came within one second of breaking our school record and we came in last at the State Open. That should let you know what the competition is like at that level.”

“I’m not complaining,” McKee added. “But it just goes to show you the kind of competition you face at the state level when you come within one second of a school record and end up last in the Class L.”

In Class L, Maher finished 11th in the 200 IM in 2:03.88, one of six Naugy swimmers who broke their preliminary times. Alves finished 17th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.99, and in the process broke into the All-Time top ten list at Naugatuck.

Logan Martin put up a score of 331.60 to finish 12th in diving. The 200 freestyle relay squad of Manasoiu, Dale Wakeley, Austin Herb and Elliot Dupont placed 16th in 1:38.84, beating their preliminary time by almost two seconds.

Maher finished 12th in the 100 butterfly in 55.45, and Wakeley was 21st in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.76, both beat their preliminary times. Wakeley (100 freestyle), Herb (500 freestyle) and Manasoiu (100 backstroke) all missed the finals by tenths of a second.
