The Greyhounds advanced to the semifinals of the NVL girls basketball tournament after a rugged win over Crosby on Saturday.

No. 3 Naugatuck beat No. 6 Crosby, 50-38, in the first round at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury.

Alyana Sosa led Naugatuck (18-3) with 21 points. She added three rebounds, three assists and eight steals.

“It’s crazy,” Sosa said. “We have never gone this far. No one believed we could, so it is nice to prove everyone wrong.”

Hailey Deitelbaum added eight points against Crosby (13-8).

Naugatuck will face No. 7 Wolcott (12-9) in the semifinals Monday at 5 p.m. at Kennedy High School in Waterbury. Naugatuck beat Wolcott twice during the regular season.

“We need to do our best to not allow their players to get hot and that comes with communication on the defensive end,” Naugatuck coach Gail Cheney said. “Wolcott is a great team and it should be a hard fought game for us both.”

The winner will face the winner of the second seminal game between No. 1 Holy Cross (19-2) and No. 4 Sacred Heart (16-5). The final game is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m.
