BEACON FALLS — After a sluggish start to the season, the Woodland High boys soccer team is starting to fire on all cylinders.

The Hawks are undefeated in their last five matches, going 4-0-1 during that span. No result was more impressive than a 2-2 tie against unbeaten Watertown on Sept. 26. That result is the Indians’ only blemish in an otherwise dominant season so far.

Christian Poirier scored two goals and Juliano D’Melio made six saves in the middle game of Woodland’s current five-match hot streak.

Since then, the Hawks have rolled in two matches. They blanked Wilby, 5-0, last Friday thanks to another two goals by Christian Poirier, two more by Maciej Lewicki and one by Jack LaPerriere. LaPerriere also had two assists, Poirier one, Devon Polletta one and Josh Powanda one, while Andrew Spofford made five saves.

The streak continued Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Wolcott. Poirier, LaPerriere, Senol Music and Dante Polletta all scored, while Poirier, Cole Barros and both Pollettas contributed assists. Spofford made five saves.

Woodland has rocketed up to a 5-2-1 mark in the Naugatuck Valley League (5-3-1 overall) and stands in fifth place in the NVL tournament rankings. The Hawks have an important match Friday at Torrington before visiting Oxford next Tuesday.
