First collegiate shutout

Former Woodland goal keeper Jenna Pannone, who had 31 career shutouts for the Hawks, recorded her first collegiate shutout for the University of New England Oct. 4 in a double overtime, scoreless tie with Colby College. Pannone had nine saves in the 110-minute match.

Shocker in T-town

Naugatuck senior tri-captain Jayla Piazza led the volleyball team to a stunning 3-0 sweep of undefeated Torrington last Friday. Piazza played a key role guarding the back line coming up with 16 digs, 14 points and six aces.

Hat trick for the Hawks

Woodland girls soccer tri-captain Haley Andrews, a senior, recorded a hat trick to lead the Hawks to a 5-0 win over Torrington last Thursday.

Huge role off the bench

Naugatuck junior Hailey Deitelbaum came off the bench to record 12 kills to help the Greyhounds to an upset of defending NVL volleyball champion Torrington last Friday.

Leader in the pocket

Naugatuck senior quarterback Mike Plasky passed for a season-high 200 yards and threw two touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds to a convincing 76-6 win over Wilby last Friday.

Boys soccer

Naugatuck improved to 9-1-1 with wins over Waterbury Career, 5-0, last Friday and Wolcott, 4-0, on Tuesday. Zach Alves recorded the shutout in the net for the ‘Hounds against Waterbury Career. Matt Carroll, Vinny Knupp and Tommy Martins, Felipe Peireira and Aren Seeger scored goals. Martins had two goals against Wolcott, and Knupp and Felipe Perreira each had one. Alves made one save in net. Naugatuck will host St. Paul on Friday.

Girls soccer

Naugatuck battled Watertown last Thursday to a scoreless tie. Sydney O’Donnell made 10 saves in net for the Greyhounds. Naugatuck fell short to Newtown, 2-1, on Saturday. O’Donnell again made 10 saves, and Angelina Oliveria scored off an Emma Sonski assist. The Greyhounds improved to 8-2-1 on the year with a 2-1 win over Wolcott on Tuesday. Noelle Jacobi and Macie Best scored for Naugatuck off assists from Hailey Boulanger. O’Donnell made six saves. The Greyhounds will be at St. Paul on Friday.

Girls swimming

Naugatuck fell to Seymour last Friday, 83-74. Seymour finished first in every event, and there were no reported outcomes for the Greyhounds. Naugatuck bounced back with a 95-85 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday to improve to 4-4-1 on the season. Individual event winners for Naugatuck included Katelyn Fortney in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, and Molly Kennelly in the 100 free. Naugatuck will be back in action when they host Holy Cross Oct. 17.

Boys soccer

Woodland improved to 7-3-1 on the season with wins over Torrington, 3-1, last Friday and Oxford, 4-1, on Tuesday. Macieji Lewicki scored two goals, and Jack LaPerrierre added a goal against Torrington. Andrew Spofford made eight saves in the net. LaPerrierre, Senol Music, Christian Poirier and Lewicki scored versus Oxford. Woodland will host Sacred Heart on Friday.

Girls soccer

Woodland stands at 9-1 after wins over Torrington, 5-0, last Friday and Oxford, 6-1, on Tuesday. Haley Andrews led the way against Torrington with three goals and an assist. Megen Sirowich and Shannon Pruzinsky each had a goal and an assist. Alanna Carasone made two saves in the net. Julia Casimiro scored twice against Oxford, and Andrews, Karly Laliberte, Erica Poehailos and Nicole Sherman each added a goal. Olivia Kotsaftis had two assists, and Carasone made seven saves. Woodland will be at Sacred Heart on Friday.

Girls swimming

Woodland improved to 8-1 on the season last Friday with an 89-63 win over Wilby-Kaynor. The 200 medley relay team of Ainsley Clark, Brooke Pope, Dia Gawronski and Zarina Garcia swam to victory (2:13.51). Kyla Drewry won the 200 freestyle (2:16.82), and Aly Rojcov took first in the 100 fly (59.18). Pope (50 freestyle) and Gawronski (200 IM) also had first-place finishes. Alyssa VanAlystyne won the diving competition with a score of 176. Woodland was scheduled to host Torrington on Wednesday. Woodland will conclude the week versus St. Paul on Friday.
