WOLCOTT — The second-best offensive outing of the season for the Woodland High football team wasn’t enough last Friday night in Wolcott.

Despite a pair of 200-yard rushers and six touchdowns, the Hawks surrendered nine touchdowns and suffered a 64-45 defeat in the second-highest scoring game in the state this season.

Only Norwalk’s 68-57 victory over Hamden in Week 1 last month saw more points than did last Friday’s game at Joe Monroe Field.

The Hawks’ Ben Nuss carried 28 times for 284 yards and a touchdown, while Edit Krivca continued his strong junior season with 20 carries for 200 yards and four touchdowns. Joe Shea also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Bulinski in the first quarter.

Woodland (2-4) fought back from a 22-7 first-quarter deficit to tie the game at 22 entering halftime. The teams traded touchdowns to open the third frame, and Krivca tied up the game at 30 with a 65-yard touchdown run.

From there, though, Wolcott (3-3) scored five of the game’s final seven scores. Senior quarterback Mike Polzella was phenomenal, completing 17 of 26 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns while adding 27 carries for 278 yards and three more carries. Jake Sforza added 13 carries for 90 yards and four touchdowns.

A message left with Woodland coach Chris Moffo wasn’t returned.

The Eagles won their ninth straight meeting against the Hawks. Woodland’s last win over Wolcott came in a 29-21 victory in 2006.

Wolcott’s 64 points are the second-most ever scored in a game against Woodland. Last season, Sacred Heart-Kaynor Tech posted a 67-28 win against the Hawks.

Woodland will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak when it visits St. Paul (5-1) on Saturday in Bristol at 1 p.m. The Falcons are coming off a 50-0 defeat at Ansonia.
