Tennis wraps up in the postseason

Naugatuck and Woodland were well represented on the tennis courts in the postseason.

The girls State Open got underway Saturday at Yale University in New Haven with opening round and first round matches in the singles and doubles completion.

In the only opening round match involving a Naugy or Woodland player, the Greyhounds’ No. 2 singles player Floraine Evardo dropped a match to Sarah Rothman of Old Saybrook, 8-3.

Woodland’s No. 1 singles player Ally Mayne, the NVL champion, ran into some stiff competition and dropped an 8-4 decision to Abigail Murphy of Southington in a first-round matchup.

The Hawks’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Mia Piccolo and Alanna Carasone lost an 8-2 decision to Jessica Coughlin and Paige Larkin of Coginchaug in the first round of doubles play.

Naugatuck had two doubles teams at the State Open. The teams of Sabrah Cegielski and Kelly Redmond and Lori Dietz and Patricia Escalaria lost by default.

In girls tennis, No. 12 Woodland fell to No. 21 Rocky Hill, 7-0, in the qualifying round of the Class S team tournament. No. 4 Naugatuck fell to No. 13 Woodstock, 7-0, in the first round of the Class M tournament.

The boys compete in a divisional format with teams being awarded point totals based on individual wins.

Josh Powanda of Woodland represented the Hawks in Class S and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Owen Harter of Granby Memorial in the first round.

In the Class L competition, Naugatuck’s Nelson Lavoura lost 8-0 to Angelica Rodrigues of Wilbur Cross in the opening round. In another opening-round battle, Naugy’s Brandon Sampaio fell 8-5 to Vincenzo Mariasi of South Windsor.

In the first round of Class L singles play, Naugatuck’s Alec Durante lost by forfeit to Nicholas Cristante of North Haven and Naugy’s Marco Rebelo dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Kevin Tran of Masuk.

Naugatuck sent three doubles teams to the Class L divisional tournament.

The tandem of P.J. Morrissey and Matt Triscritti dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Adam Glassman and Will Carpenter of Hall.

The Greyhounds’ team of Andres Maldonado and Dylan Triscritti fell 6-0, 6-0 to Nathan Graber and Ethan Wilkins of Hall in the first round.

The team of Zakary Robushi and Sergio Rodriguez lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Jason Rickenbacher and Dan Zhu of South Windsor in the first round.
