NAUGATUCK — The girls are making strides when it comes to golf in the NVL.

The NVL held a nine-hole tournament for the girls in the league June 1 at the Watertown Golf Club in Watertown. It was the second year in a row the league held a girls tournament.

Veronica Diaz of Sacred Heart and Abigail Pruchnicki of Naugatuck finished tied for first with scores of 55, but Diaz was awarded the crown on a match of cards. Mia Rotatori, who finished as runner-up last year, placed third with a solid round of 56.

“We have some pretty good talent from our girls,” Naugatuck head coach Richard Troy said. “Mia has shot rounds of 50 and 51 this year from the white tees. She has played in several varsity matches along with Abigail.”

Sophomores Katie Brown and Francesca Spino rounded out Naugatuck’s foursome at the tournament.

“Katie and Francesca were a little frustrated as they didn’t play a few holes the way they had wanted to,” Troy said. “They were both right there, only about five of six strokes from the leader.”

Juniors Samantha Royka, Hannah Butler, Marina Sounanthanam and Madison Brink have the opportunity to take on larger roles next season.

Troy was pretty high on the progress made by some of the younger players this season, as well. Freshmen Meghan Korowotny and Alysha Cacace and sophomore Sofia Marques have shown the ability to drive the ball.

“We have a couple of girls who have progressed to the point where they can take on bigger roles next season,” Troy said. “We did have some girls fall off the pace as they lost interest. Sometimes this game can be frustrating but the more you practice the better you are going to get at it.

“Based on where we started to where we ended up I think we made great strides to be a successful team. I’m looking forward to next season and seeing how much further along we can get out on the course.”
