BEACON FALLS — As the Hawks seek to become more consistent on the course, they have been knocking strokes off their game.

Woodland put together two solid rounds last week but only came away with one win to show for it.

Last Thursday at Oxford Greens, the Hawks pulled out a 197-230 decision over Naugatuck and broke the 200 barrier for the first time this season.

Julian Perino was the co-medalist putting together a solid round of 42. Alec Feducia was right behind with a season-best round of 44. Chris Guerrette shot a 54, and Josh Hassan came in at 57.

“We are starting to get our scores down but not enough,” Woodland head coach Bill Carangelo said. “We are starting to see some improvement, but it’s always that one hole that gives us the most problems.

“In order to be competitive in this league you have to get your scores down to around 180. We need to improve our short game. We are losing too many holes with three and four putts.”

The Hawks played their best round of the season last Friday at Farmingbury Hills against Wolcott but dropped a close 174-182 decision. Perino put up a season-best round of 38 and finished as the co-medalist for the second match in a row.

“Julian is really starting to pick up his game,” Carangelo said. “We are making progress as a team, but I anticipated a couple of better rounds from some of the others because Farmingbury is a little easier at a par 34.”

Feducia shot another solid round of 45 with Guerrette finishing at 49 and Hassan coming in at 50.

Carangelo explained that one bad hole, where scores hit double digits, can take a player right out of a match.

“It’s always that one hole where problems arise and you shoot a 10 or an 11 and that can throw your whole round off,” he said. “It all comes down to consistency. And for us to get better as a team we need to find that consistency.”

The Hawks shot under 200 again in a 191-202 win over Seymour on Monday.

Perino matched his season-best with a 38 and earned medalist honors. Hassan shot a 42, Feducia had a 54 and TJ Giarratona shot a 57.

The Hawks’ score crept up over 200 on Tuesday in a 185-203 loss to Torrington at the Torrington Country Club.

Perino shot a 41 to lead the way for Woodland (5-4) and earned medalist honors. Feducia (59) Hassan (53) and Guerrette (50) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.

The Hawks will host the annual Woodland Invitational on Thursday at Oxford Greens. The Hawks plan to use the foursome of Perino, Hassan, Guerrette and Feducia in the tournament.

Woodland will get back to NVL play May 12 against Sacred Heart.
