1,000-point career mark

Woodland senior Morina Bojka broke the 1,000-career-point plateau last Friday with 32 points in a much-needed 55-47 win over Waterbury Career.

Back-to-Back

Naugatuck senior center Shane Swierbitowicz led the Greyhounds with back-to-back 15 points games in a tough weekend for the Greyhounds. Naugatuck dropped a one-point battle to Seymour last Friday and were undone by Notre Dame of Fairfield on Saturday.

Making waves

Naugy junior speedster Brian Goggin swam to first place in the 50 freestyle in 23.89 and then took second in the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.14 in last Friday’s 96-87 loss to Pomperaug.

Double figures

Naugatuck junior Alyana Sosa scored 11 points giving the Greyhounds another double-figure scorer on the season in a tough 53-42 loss to Seymour last Friday.

Another scorer

Woodland senior Rich Rousseau scored 16 points in last Friday’s 76-54 loss to Waterbury Career team giving head coach Tom Hunt the second scorer he has been searching for all season.

Naugy Notes

Boys Basketball

After beating Wolcott, 56-47, Jan. 18, the Greyhounds had a tough go of it this past weekend. Naugatuck dropped a tough 65-64 game to Seymour last Friday and were outdone by Notre Dame of Fairfield, 70-56, on Saturday to fall to 4-7 on the season. Jean Lukau Mbalandaka led the way with 17 points against Seymour. Shane Swierbitowicz had 15 points, and Josh McFarland and Andre Trosan each scored 10 points to give the Greyhounds four players in double figures. Against the Lancers from Fairfield, Swierbitowicz led the way with 15 points. Corey Plasky and McFarland had 13 and 10 points, respectively. Mbalandaka added nine points, and Jamar White had seven points. Naugatuck was scheduled to play Torrington on Wednesday, after press time. The Greyhounds will host Derby on Friday and Sacred Heart Jan. 30.

Girls Basketball

The Greyhounds split a pair of games last week. Naugatuck topped Wolcott, 43-35, on Jan. 18. Molly Kennedy led Naugatuck with 13 points. Alyana Sosa and Alexis Woods had eight and six points, respectively. The Greyhounds fell to 5-8 on the year following a 53-42 loss to Seymour last Friday. Naugatuck started out slow falling behind Seymour 16-4 in the first quarter. Naugy outscored Seymour the rest of the way but came up on the short side. Kennedy led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sosa had 11 points and Mia Rotatori added eight points. The Greyhounds will be at Derby on Friday and at Torrington on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

The Hawks fell to 0-9 on the season following losses to Oxford, 62-43, on Jan. 18, and Waterbury Career, 76-54, last Friday. Zack Bedryczuk had a team-high 18 points against Oxford, hitting on six 3-pointers. Brendan Rowley and Mike Szturma added six points each. Bedryczuk led the team again with 23 points versus Waterbury Career. Rich Rousseau had 16 points and Adem Rifati added seven points. The Hawks will visit Kennedy on Friday and host Holy Cross on Jan. 30.

Girls Basketball

The Hawks dropped an out-of-conference game to East Lyme, 50-46, Jan. 18. Morina Bojka led the team with 26 points, and Maddie Hupprich had 13 points. The Hawks had a lot to celebrate last Friday as Bojka eclipsed 1,000 career points with 32 points to lead the way in a 55-47 win over Waterbury Career. Eliza Smith had eight points, and Maddie Hupprich added six points. Bojka went on another tear with 21 points to lead the Hawks to a 48-20 win over Oxford Saturday as Woodland improved to 6-5 on the season. Smith knocked down 10 points, and Hupprich added seven points. Woodland was scheduled to play Wolcott on Wednesday. The Hawks will host Crosby on Friday and visit Holy Cross on Jan. 30.
