WATERTOWN — The Greyhounds are riding the wave of a four-game winning streak heading into the bye week.

The Greyhounds tallied their fourth victory in a row Oct. 14 dominating Watertown, 42-12.

After a four-week stretch that yielded momentum as well as much needed reps for the abundance of younger players, head coach Craig Bruno and the ‘Hounds are heading into a week of no games with a more experienced and tighter squad.

“It feels good. We wanted to get to this bye week. We knew some of the competition was easier so we felt we could make a move,” Bruno said. “We know it’s going to get harder down the stretch, but we are growing as a team and the kids are definitely coming together.”

While Naugatuck (5-1) continued its win streak, another came to a close against the Indians (1-5).

In the three previous weeks, the Greyhounds held the opposition to zero points. While it looked as if Naugatuck would claim another shutout, the Indians were able to find holes in Naugatuck’s defense in the third quarter. Watertown scored on an 88-yard run up the middle by Adam Alenckis and then again off of a touchdown pass caught by Daniel Graziano.

Watertown’s two scores aside, Naugatuck rolled for much of the night. Senior Tyler Deitelbaum and sophomore Jacob Fazekas led Naugatuck’s scoring barrage, tallying two touchdowns a piece after hard-fought drives running the ball.

Deitelbaum started and ended the first half with a rushing touchdown, as the Greyhounds took a 22-0 lead by halftime. Throughout the game the senior running back proved he was willing to carry the load and fire up his team, especially after three of his teammates went down due to injuries.

“A lot of times injuries on your team lead to frustration and you try to take that out, but you have to channel that in the right direction,” Deitelbaum said. “I knew I had to get the guys going, and if we could get it [moving] forward we could go and win the rest of the game like we did, so it really worked out well.”

After driving down the field and dodging Watertown defenders, Fazekas would not be denied and broke through several players to score the Greyhounds’ second touchdown of the night.

Fazekas would go on to score Naugatuck’s first points of the second half, after weaving through traffic and breaking to the opposing sideline for the score in the final minutes of the third quarter.

In his first year on varsity, Fazekas has already contributed to the offense with versatility and ferocity while running the ball.

“I was just ready to make the most of my opportunities,” Fazekas said. “Everybody is trying to take the game away from us right now, but we just got to keep winning. Everybody’s got to keep doing their job, and tonight I did mine.”

Following the Indians’ two touchdowns, the Garnett and Grey defense became air tight, and returned to its old form.

The Greyhounds would end the night with touchdowns from senior Jalen Datil and sophomore Elijah Robinson to clinch the blowout victory.

Naugatuck has a bye this week. The Greyhounds will host Crosby (2-4) Oct. 27.
