NAUGATUCK — Woodland and Naugatuck went head to head in the final regular season golf match Tuesday at Hop Brook Golf Course.

The Hawks came in looking to finish up the season on a strong note, and left Naugatuck with a 186-226.

“We have gone from 199 to 166 and everything in between,” Woodland head coach Bill Carangelo said about the season. “We could have been a little more consistent.”

The match was a final tune-up before the Naugatuck Valley League championship, which is Thursday at the Watertown Country Club.

Julian Perino shot a medalist round of 40 to lead the Hawks (13-3) for Naugy. Ryan Warner shot a 47, Josh Hassan came in at 49 and Chris Guerrette finished with a 50.

Jake Alcorace led the Greyhounds (5-11) with a 41. Ethan Maxwell shot a 58, followed by Eli Rachiele with a 62 and Ryan Brink, who played in his first varsity match, with a 65.

“Finishing up at home is good getting ready for Thursday’s championship at Watertown,” Naugatuck head coach Bob Clark said. “This is our senior day for Jake, Ethan Maxwell and Nick Fox. These guys have meant a lot to the program and they are looking to finish up strong.”

Woodland finished the regular season with three losses, a year after going 15-1.

“We had some real good matches this year and then we didn’t play up to our level a few times,” Carangelo said.

He added, “It was a solid season but we were hoping for more and we will see how we do on Thursday at the NVL match.”

Naugatuck has been a work in progress all season, but has shown great growth over recent matches. In their match with St. Paul on May 26, the Greyhounds posted their best score of the season with a 159.

“We are pretty much where we were last year,” Clark said. “We started off slow and then started to pick up our game a little bit. Everyone is starting to play their best golf right now, especially Jake.”
