Hop Brook championship to start, players sought for junior team

NAUGATUCK — The 2016 Hop Brook Golf Course Club Championship will begin June 27 with qualifying.

Qualifying will go until July 10. Once qualifying is complete, men and women will be paired into flights for the tournament. The finals are scheduled for July 31, with a rain date of Aug 7. The entry fee is $20 per person.

The Hop Brook Junior Interclub Team is looking for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 to participate in the 2016 season.

The team will hold weekly practices on Thursdays at 9 a.m. Team members will receive six one-hour private golf lessons, play in matches against other junior programs in the area, and entrance into the 2016 Junior Club Championship. The fee to join is $250.

Golden Glove Club holding softball camp

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Golden Glove Club will hold its annual Summer Softball Camp next week.

The camps is June 27 to July 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Athletes will work on defense, hitting, base running and improving their knowledge of the game. For more information or to register, email Kevin Wesche at coachwesche@gmail.com.

Naugatuck Senior Babe Ruth earns wins

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Senior Babe Ruth swept a doubleheader over the weekend.

Naugatuck defeated Southbury, 10-0. Evan Pellicia had three hits and two RBI. Austin DeRosa had two hits and Steve Moody added a two-run single. Jordan Carreria pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Naugatuck also beat Shelton2, 9-1. Chris Yacavone and Chris Ferrara had two-run singles. Brandon Caldwell had two hits and Brian Drapeau added a RBI single. Gary DeRosa was the winning pitcher.

On Monday, Naugatuck defeated Watertown, 6-4. Tyler Carreira, Jordan Carreira and DeRosa combined to pitch a three-hitter with nine strikeouts. Tyler McGovern paced the offense with a three-run triple.

Baseball camp set for future Greyhounds

NAUGATUCK — The week-long Future Greyhounds Baseball Camp is set for this month.

The camp runs 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily from July 25 to July 29 at Naugatuck High School, 543 Rubber Ave. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14 from Naugatuck and surrounding towns.
