BEACON FALLS — The Woodland softball team came into the season armed with six seniors and high hopes but fell victim to a late-season slump.

Senior captains Carla Piccolo, Sam Buzgo and Gabby Bedryczuk along with seniors Cam Caswell, Gina Farina and Sam White had experience and attitude to lead the Hawks.

Woodland got out to a quick start at 9-5 and then stumbled during a late five-game losing streak to finish the regular season 10-10.

“We may have peaked a little too early,” commented Woodland head coach Loren Luddy during the team’s losing streak. “This is a very good team and we proved that in games this season.”

The Hawks showed their resolve dropping one-run games to Holy Cross and Seymour, the two teams that met for the Naugatuck Valley League championship. Seymour, which won the league championship, will play for the Class M title on Friday.

The Hawks will be well represented in upcoming Select Games.

“Cam (Caswell) made All-NVL. Carla (Piccolo), Sam (White) and Maddie (Hupprich) made All-Brass Division and they will play in the Select Games,” Luddy said.

Caswell led the team with 34 hits and a .531 average, belting four triples, scoring 21 runs and driving in 17 runs. Piccolo led the team with three home runs. She batted .416 average with 32 hits, 28 runs scored and 12 RBI.

White had 28 hits for a .483 average with 17 runs scored and 17 RBI. Junior Maddie Hupprich had 22 hits, a .355 average, 11 runs scored and 13 RBI.

The Hawks have strong leadership in place for next season. Along with Hupprich, Woodland returns juniors Emily Brouillette, Jenn Triana, Vanessa Adams, Rita Plante and Meredith Dyckman to lead the way.
