BEACON FALLS — The Woodland golf team finished the regular season at 13-3 and among the contenders in the Naugatuck Valley League. The Hawks didn’t soar as high as expected at the NVL championship last week, finishing sixth.

Watertown (324) won the title for the second year in a row June 2 at the Watertown Country Club. Holy Cross (353) finished as the runner-up and Torrington (357) took third.

The Hawks’ foursome shot a team total of 382, a little higher than head coach Bill Carangelo figured.

“Obviously the bar was set pretty high after going 15-1 last year and to be 13-3 this year was an accomplishment,” Carangelo said. “But we did have some rounds that got away from us and we could have scored better.”

Sophomore Julian Perino led Woodland shooting an 89. Freshman Josh Hassan was right behind him with a solid round of 94. Senior Ryan Warner shot a 99, and sophomore Chris Guerrette shot a 101.

Perino and Crowell were named to the All-Brass Division team.

“Earlier in the season I figured our weakest link was our number four and five guys,” Carangelo said. “As the season progressed we started to get some consistent scores from the three-four and five spots but struggled at our top two spots.”

Woodland qualified for the Division III championship that was played Monday at Crestbrook in Watertown. The Hawks finished 16th, shooting a team total of 369, among the 20 teams that qualified.

Perino finished tied for 49th place with a solid score of 90. Hassan was right behind him again with a score of 91. Warner came through with a 93 and Zach Crowell finished with a 95. Junior Alec Feducia rounded out the Hawks’ top five with a 108.

The Hawks will lose their top golfers in Warner and Crowell to graduation, but look to have plenty of options to choose from for next year.

“We go into next year losing our top two guys in Ryan (Warner) and Zach (Crowell),” Carangelo said. “But I’m confident we have two solid players who will fill those spots in Julian (Perino) and Josh (Hassan).

“Julian was our MVP this season and we are looking for him to be the team leader next year. We are hoping Chris (Guerrette) and Alec (Feducia) can close the gap on their scores and give us a solid foursome next season so we can make another run in the league.”
