Close calls going Hawks’ way

BEACON FALLS — The Woodland golf team continues to win, but the white-knuckle outcomes are a little too close for comfort for head coach Bill Carangelo.

“We are putting together wins but it’s really tight,” Carangelo said. “It the beginning of the year we figured we had three solid players who would hit the low 40s and even the high 30s. But we are not approaching the 30s, and with each match the scores are continuing to go up by one or two strokes. We should have won the division this year, with what we had returning, but Holy Cross got us twice and will win the division.”

The Hawks escaped Torrington on Tuesday with a 184-186 win.

Woodland’s Josh Hassan was the medalist for the round with a 42. Julian Perino (45), Zack Crowell (48) and Alec Feducia (49) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.

The tight win was the second nail-bitter in as many matches for the Hawks.

Woodland snuck by St. Paul May 19, pulling out a 180-185 win over the Falcons.

Perino led the way shooting a sturdy round of 41. Zach Crowell came in with a 43, Ryan Warner shot a 46 and Hassan shot a 50.

“We haven’t played our best golf yet,” Carangelo said. “Zach is a little frustrated with his scores coming in the high 40s. Ryan could be feeling some pressure at living up to the expectations of being number one.

“We were hoping to be competitive by finding that consistent fourth guy who could break into the 40s. We have reached that goal, now we need to go out there and play our best round of the season.”

The Hawks had some breathing room in a 174-191 win over Sacred Heart on Wednesday. Crowell and Hassan were co-medalists for the round with a 42. Warner and Perino both shot a 45 for Woodland (12-3).

The Hawks will finish up the regular season May 31 at Hop Brook against Naugatuck, before the Naugatuck Valley League tournament June 2 in Watertown.
