BEACON FALLS — The Woodland boys basketball team notched its third victory of the season against rival Seymour last week.

The Hawks picked up a 71-67 win on the road over the Wildcats Jan. 27.

Eric Beutel (13 points), Rich Rousseau (17 points), Zach Graveline (10 points) and Zach Bedryczuk (18 points) all scored in the double digits as the Hawks (3-11) scored their highest point total of the season.

Jaylen Crawford of the Wildcats (1-11) hit seven three-pointers in route to a game-high 32 points. The entire Hawks team only had seven threes all night. In the end, Crawford couldn’t do it by himself. The Hawks seized control of the game in the second quarter by turning a one-point advantage after the first period into a 40-31 halftime lead.

The Hawks fell to Crosby, 87-45, last Friday. The game quickly got out of control with the Bulldogs (11-2) scoring more points in the first quarter (26) than the Hawks did in the first half (23).

Beutel had ten points to make it three of his last five games with ten or more points. The other two games he just missed the mark with eight. Crosby had four of their five starters score in the double digits with two of them dropping 20 or more.

Bedryczuk, a freshman, has continued to be a pleasant surprise for the Hawks and leads the team in scoring. He does his damage from beyond the arch most nights and has made a three-pointer in each of his starts.

Bedryczuk showed his range again in an 85-40 loss to Torrington (7-7) Tuesday night. He led the Hawks with 18 points, scoring all of those points from downtown.

Beutel and Rousseau added eight pints each against the Raiders.

Torrington’s Zak Mancini hit seven three-pointers of his own on his way to a game-high 25 points. The Red Raiders only had three players score in double digits but had eight players with five or more points.

Woodland will need to win five of the last six games to qualify for states. The Hawks will look to start a push to the postseason Friday when they host Naugatuck. Woodland will face Watertown on the road next Tuesday before hosting Wolcott next Thursday.
