Senior captain steps up

Woodland senior and girls basketball captain Carla Piccolo hit the 20-point mark just once during the regular season but hit the mark again in the NVL tournament quarterfinals Saturday versus Kennedy in a 58-38 loss.

Running to a school record

Naugatuck senior Mark Zamani finished fifth in the 1000 meters at the State Open last week in 2:33.85 and set a new school record in the process. He will go on to compete in the New England Championship meet in Boston.

Senior makes a splash

Woodland senior swimmer James Jensen finished the regular season with a splash. Jensen was a double winner for the Hawks in the 50 and 100 freestyle in last Friday’s 90-78 loss to Torrington.

Senior leading scorer

Naugy senior Fejiro Onakpoma has been a bright spot on the season leading the boys basketball team in scoring on most nights. Fejiro led the way with 23 points in the Greyhounds 85-46 loss to Bassick Feb. 17.

A triple threat

Naugatuck junior swimmer Evan Bombery showed just how much he can influence the outcome of a meet when he won the 200 and 500 freestyle races and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay in a 98-74 win over Watertown Feb. 17.

Boys swimming

The Greyhounds knocked off Watertown, 98-74, Feb. 17. Evan Bombery led the way with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Bombery was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team along with Eric Cruz, Martin Lippai and Brian Goggin. Peter Morrissey won the 200 IM, Robert Spino won the 100 freestyle and Omari Solomon won the 100 backstroke. Naugy (11-2) finished up the regular season with an 87-81 win over Masuk Feb. 19. Solomon won the 200 freestyle, Spino won the 50 freestyle and Eric Cruz took first in diving with a score of 173.20. Nicholas Ryan won the 100 butterfly, Brain Goggin took first in the 100 freestyle and Bombery won the 500 freestyle. The Greyhounds will now prepare for the NVL championship. The diving final is March 2 and the swim championship is March 4.

Boys swimming

The Hawks defeated Oxford, 84-79, Feb. 17 with James Jensen leading the way. Jensen won the 100 freestyle and was part in the winning 200 medley relay along with Jake Stow, Donovan White and Jordan Baer. Zach Arisian won the 200 freestyle, Colin Kennelly won the 50 freestyle and Julie Hinckley won the 500 freestyle. The Hawks (4-8) ended the regular season with a 90-78 loss to Torrington. Jensen was a double winner in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Stow won the 100 backstroke, White won the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay team of Hinckley, Arisian, Jeff Varesio and Kennelly took first place. Woodland will now prepare for the NVL championship. The diving final is March 2 and the swim championship is March 4.
