Career high

Naugatuck senior James Mesidor has been picking up his scoring and last Friday threw down a career-high 25 points in a 65-46 win over Derby to help the Greyhounds snap a five-game skid.

Beating the buzzer

Woodland junior Morina Bojka put down one of the biggest baskets of the season for the Hawks with a buzzer-beater to defeat Seymour 51-49 last week in a much-needed win that stopped a three-game losing streak.

Raising the bar

Woodland freshman gymnast Stephanie Poynton recorded a season-best in a tri-meet at Pomperaug last week. She scored a season high 35.00 in the All-Around and finished first in the vault at 9.1, tied for first in the bars at 8.3 and had two second-place finishes in the beam at 8.85 and the floor at 8.75.

Making a splash

Woodland sophomore Jake Stow helped lead led the boys swimming team to its third win of the season last Friday, 90-84 over Wilby. Stow was a double-winner taking first in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.63 and the 200 freestyle in 2:13.71.

Giving it the old college try

Eastern Connecticut State University junior Brandon Kuczenski, of Naugatuck, logged his most minutes in over a month last Friday for the ECSU boys basketball team. Finally recovered from a broken finger, Kuczenski had six rebounds, three assists and two points in 28 minutes to help the Warriors to a 63-61 win over Keene State.

Word from the Woods

Boys Swimming

The Hawks recorded their third win of the season in a 90-84 victory over Wilby Jan. 29.  The foursome of Julie Hinckley, Donovan White, Jordan Bauer and James Jensen swam to victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.59. Hinckley also won the 200 IM in 2:31.31. White won the 50 freestyle in 27.56 and Jensen won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.62. Jake Stow was a double winner in the 100 and 200 freestyle with Colin Kennelly winning the 500 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay squad of Zack Arisian, Greg Aldrich, White and Jensen swam to victory to secure the meet. The Hawks fell to Watertown, 94-77, Tuesday to drop to 3-6 on the season. Aldrich won the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.52 and the 400 relay squad of Alexander Bellavance, Hinckley, Arisian and Kennelly raced to victory for the Hawks. Woodland will host Torrington on Friday and Holy Cross next Tuesday.
