NE-10 Rookie of the Week

Naugatuck’s Michaela Pernell earned NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors in her first collegiate track meet for Merrimack College at the UMass-Boston Indoor Open. The Warriors freshman ran a 7.85 in the 60 meters for Merrimack’s only first-place finish at the meet, and the time was the third best in school history. Pernell went on to post the second best time in school history in the 200 meters (26.35) and earned fourth place.

Former Greyhound excels for Warriors

Brandon Kuczenski has worked his way into the starting lineup for the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors. The junior forward is averaging 20 minutes, four point and four rebounds a game for the 7-3 Warriors.

Beacon Falls hoopster leading Highlanders

Ethan Vance of Beacon Falls is leading the way for the Chase Collegiate Highlanders (3-2). Vance threw down 18 points last week as Chase beat Watkinson, 77-71.

Former Hawk now a Greyhound

Sophomore linebacker Levi Fancher of Beacon Falls helped to lead the Assumption College Greyhounds to an 11-2 record this fall. Fancher was second on the team in tackles with 83 in 13 games played with two forced fumbles and an interception.

Blue Devils captain ends college career

Jake Pinho finished his collegiate football career as captain for the Central Connecticut Blue Devils. Pinho made 20 tackles on defense for the 4-7 Blue Devils.

Naugy Notes

Girls Basketball

Naugatuck began the season Tuesday against Watertown. The Greyhounds fell short by a slim 36-32 margin. Nicole Boucher led Naugatuck with 14 points. Molly Kennedy had six points as Ally Mezzo and Andrea Mercer each had four points. Naugatuck (0-1) hits the road to face Woodland on Friday and Anosmia on Monday.

Word from the Woods

Girls Basketball

Woodland got the season underway Tuesday against defending NVL champion Torrington. The Hawks came up on the short end of a 42-31 final margin after tying the game at 24-24 late in the third period. Carla Piccolo led the Hawks (0-1) with 14 points. Morina Bojka added six points, Haley Andrews contributed five points, Cam Caswell had four points with Jenna Pannone added two points. Woodland will host Naugatuck on Friday before visiting Oxford on Monday.
