‘Hounds place 6th at NVLs

WATERBURY — The Naugatuck girls swim team put up several top-five finishes at the Naugatuck Valley League championships on Nov. 6 at Kennedy High School.

Naugy finished sixth overall out of 12 schools with 393.5 points. Sacred Heart won the title for the third straight year with a final total of 780.

Addison Best had Naugy’s best individual finish, a second-place mark in the 500 free. Best finished in 5:47.04, while Liz Sullivan of Sacred Heart took the event in 5:29.94.

Best also took fifth in the 200 free with a time of 2:09.82, less than a second from fourth place.  Kim Hylan of St. Paul Catholic won the event in 2:01.28.

In the 400 free relay, Best joined Faith Tuscano, Olivia Filanowski and Cara Rotatori to put up a fifth-place finish.  The relay team put up a time of 4:13.21.

Rotatori took fourth in the 100 backstroke and was touched out by Watertown’s Cassie Fotos, who narrowly placed in third. Rotatori had a time of 1:05.74, while Fotos’ time was 1:05.22.

Alexandra Silva placed sixth in the breaststroke in 1:20.35, with teammate Amanda Rinaldi taking 14th (1:25.75).  Silva also took 12th in the 200 IM.

Freshman Katie Brown, who posted one of the top-10 scores in Naugy history last month, took eighth in the diving event.  Brown earned a score of 286.25.

Other notable finishes included Tuscano, who took 13th in the 200 IM and 16th in the backstroke. Filanowski was 14th in the 50 free and Julianna Scully took 16th in the 200 IM.

Rotatori, Silva, Scully and Filanowski took seventh in the 200 medley relay.

The Greyhounds will now prepare for the Class S state meet. The diving competition is Thursday. Swimmers will hit the pool Saturday for qualifying. The championship is Nov. 18 at Wesleyan University in Middletown.
