Mo’s Moments of the Week

Shutting them down

Naugatuck’s senior goalkeeper Rabbi Ahmed recorded three shutouts in the final week of the regular season to help the Greyhounds to one of the top spots in the NVL tournament. Ahmed kept Wolcott out of the net in a 2-0 win Oct. 22 and on Monday he made four saves in a crucial 1-0 win over Ansonia. The Greyhounds shut out Sacred Heart, 6-0, Tuesday in the regular season finale. Ahmed has allowed just four goals in Naugatuck’s wins and ties this year.

Leading the way

It’s no accident that Michael Campos is a senior captain for the Greyhounds’ boys soccer team. He leads by example with all-out hustle and a never-give-up attitude. With Naugatuck facing a stiff challenge Monday from an Ansonia team looking to move up the ladder in the NVL tournament rankings, Campos chose senior night to step up and lead the way to victory scoring the only goal in a 1-0.

Setting up success

The Woodland volleyball team is once again a team to be reckoned with in the NVL. The Hawks have relied on a double threat this season with Carla Piccolo, the senior setter/front row player. Piccolo has a steady hand to guide the offense and a strong sense at the net that can deliver side out kills. In a 3-1 win over Naugatuck Oct. 21, Piccolo delivered 20 assists and nine kills to lead the way.

The hat trick

The Woodland girls soccer team closed out the regular season this week as the top team heading into the NVL tournament. That success has come from the leadership of seniors and the experience of a talented junior class. The Hawks also have a few younger players who have made their mark, as well. Julia Casimiro is one of them. Casimiro scored three goals in a 6-0 win over Watertown Oct. 23.

Coming of age

Woodland head coach Chris Anderson knew going into the season that there would be some growing pains with freshman quarterback Zach Bedryczuk in the pocket. The Hawks freshman signal caller has made some steady progress, and his share of mistakes. With four games left, the Hawks (4-2) have confidence heading down the stretch. Bedryczuk is a big reason for that optimism after going 4-for-5 passing for 168 yards and two touchdown passes of 84 yards and 53 yards in a 42-7 win over Sacred Heart Oct. 24.
