Naugy Notes

Boys basketball

The Greyhounds continued their hot start with a 68-52 victory over St. Paul last Friday, but suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night versus Kennedy, 65-57. Dayvon Russell and Jason Bradley had 19 points apiece for the visiting Greyhounds against St. Paul. Trevor Davis added 12 points and Josh Aviles had eight for Naugatuck. Against Kennedy, Russell scored 23 points and Bradley added eight points. Naugatuck bounced back with an 88-82 overtime win over Holy Cross Wednesday. Jarron Chapman had a game-high 38 points. Russell netted 17 points and Josh Aviles scored all 15 of his points from 3-point range for the Greyhounds (7-1). Naugy will host a showdown with Sacred Heart Friday at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds start off next week by hosting Torrington on Monday.

Girls basketball

The Naugatuck girls slipped to 1-10 on the season with losses to Holy Cross, 57-11, Jan. 15, St. Paul, 59-19, Jan. 16 and Kennedy, 68-33, on Tuesday. Andrea Mercer led the way for Naugy with four points versus St. Paul, as Jackie Aronin added two points. Mercer once again led the team with six points versus St. Paul, and Molly Kennedy added five points. Alyssa Peterson led the Greyhounds against Kennedy with nine points and 13 rebounds. Taylor Campos added eight points against the Eagles. The Greyhounds will hit the road to play Sacred Heart on Friday and Torrington on Monday.

Indoor track

There’s about a week and half left before the NVL championships and the Greyhounds will get one final tune up this weekend at the SCC Coaches Invitational in New Haven.

Word from the Woods

Girls basketball

The ups and downs continued for the Hawks. Woodland fell to St Paul, 59-17, Jan. 14, defeated Ansonia, 46-28, last Friday and came up short against Holy Cross, 72-47, on Tuesday. Carla Picollo led Woodland with seven points versus St. Paul. Becky Hale and Erika Michie pitched in four apiece. Piccolo led all scorers with 17 points versus Ansonia, as Hale added nine points. Piccolo once again led the Hawks with 13 points versus the Crusaders, as Erika Michie added 10 points. The slide continued for the Hawks Wednesday as they lost to Scared Heart, 46-33. Cameron Caswell led the Hawks (4-8) with 11 points and Hale chipped in with nine points. Woodland will host Watertown on Friday.

With about a week and half to go before the NVL championships, Woodland will look to keep up the pace this weekend at the SCC Coaches Invitational in New Haven.
