NAUGATUCK — Sibby’s used pitching and defense to capture the Naugatuck Babe Ruth championship for the second straight season.

Jordan Carreira pitched a complete game and struck out nine over seven innings in a 7-2 victory over B&G Sports to win the single-elimination tournament.

“I thought our pitching and defense were exceptional in the title game,” Sibby’s manager Dennis Sigetti said. “Jordan was on fire on the mound and our outfield had some huge catches.”

Tyler Suarez, Dawson Sigetti and Zach Mathieu made great plays in the outfield. They combined for six putouts.

Shortstop Tyler McGovern also played standout defense.

“Tyler Mac was in our opinion the best defensive player in the league,” Sigetti said. “He had a great playoff run not only against B&G but also against the Browns, who we beat in the first game.”

There were also plenty of offensive stars for the champs.

Tyler Suarez walked three times and scored three times in the leadoff spot, while McGovern had three singles, three RBI and scored two runs. Spencer Hensley, Dawson Sigetti and Matt Polek all had singles. Nick Soucy and Johnny McGovern scored a run apiece after getting on by walks, stolen bases and fielders choice groundouts.

B&G was led at the plate by Evan Bombery, who hit a long double and pitched well. Colin Sheedy singled, doubled and walked. Conor White, Kyle Soucy and Tyler Kozlowski also had hits for B&G.

Dennis Sigetti said his team’s strengths — pitching, defense and the ability to move players around to different positions — led them to the title.

“We had a good 1-2 punch on out pitching with Jordan Carreira and Nick Soucy all year,” he said. “And a defense that was just nasty. We had many interchangeable parts.”

B&G and Sibby’s split four meetings during the season.

“My hat goes off to B&G’s manager Chris Sheedy, coach John Bombery, coach Josh Kozloski and their team,” Sigetti said. “They played us well all year. We went 2-2 against them. Good thing we won the last one.”

In a season-long effort, Dennis Sigetti credited his team and how they came ready to play.

“A huge thank you to coach Gene Hensley and coach Sergio Carreira for all their help coaching with me,” Dennis Sigetti said. “They did a great job and had these kids ready to play every game.”
