Round of Applause

The Valley Dodgeball Classic registration closes this weekend, and we’re excited with the turnout we’ve gotten so far. If you’re still interested, we’ll keep things open until the end of the weekend (we had it set at Friday night, but we’ll give you a few extra days to get your affairs in order). You can head over to www.TheSusieFoundation.org to register as a captain (you don’t even need to know all your team members yet), and you’ll lock in your place. The fee is $20 per player, which includes a free lunch (by Wing It On!) and a free T-shirt. We’re also happy to announce that our official after-party will be at the New Harvest Restaurant, and a portion of the sales from folks coming from the dodgeball tournament will benefit the tournament’s groups: Beacon Hose, The Susie Foundation and the WRHS Alumni Association. We’ll also have some sweet raffles and all sorts of good stuff, so come join us May 31 — whether you’re playing or watching. Send me an email (kylebrennan1@yahoo.com) if you’ve got any questions.

Beacon Hose Softball

Your Beacon Hosers are on the rise in the Valley Firemen’s Softball League. We put forth our best showing Monday night at Bradley School in Derby, falling on the short end of a 7-4 margin against Hotchkiss Hose. Not bad for a team that lost its first two games by a combined 44-1 score. We fell behind 5-0 early in the game and couldn’t get anything going against perhaps the best pitcher we have seen so far, but our bats came alive midway through the game and we cut the deficit to 5-4. Even though we fell short, Beacon Hose is knocking on the door of victory and it will come sooner or later. (Side note: The men and women from Hotchkiss Hose are great. They had us over to their department for a cookout afterwards. We’ll reciprocate the favor in July.) Our next game is Monday night in Shelton before we return home for a three-game homestand to start June.

Word from the Woods

Boys Tennis

After winning four of six matches in the middle of the season, Woodland ran into a rough stretch and has lost its last three. The Hawks suffered a 7-2 defeat to Torrington last Wednesday, with Pat Mulholland picking up a singles win and a doubles victory with Jack Walsh. Woodland lost in a shutout to Wolcott last Friday and suffered a 4-1 loss to Lewis Mills on Tuesday. Dan Johnson earned a straight-sets singles win for the Hawks’ only point against the Spartans. Woodland fell the Watertown, 5-4, Wednesday. Woodland (4-12) is scheduled to visit Torrington on Friday and host their home finale Monday against Holy Cross.

Girls Tennis

Woodland earned a crucial victory over St. Paul on Monday to take control of the Naugatuck Valley League Brass Division race. The Hawks pulled out a 5-2 win thanks to singles victories by Ally Mayne and Salma Shitia and doubles wins by the teams of Lauren Tompkins-Erica Boccuzzi, Ayah Galal-Katie Rioux and Daphne Cianciolo-Chloe Ariola.

Woodland topped Watertown, 6-1, Wednesday. The win ran Woodland’s record to 15-1 and the Hawks have won four matches in a row after beating Kennedy, Torrington and Wolcott last week. Woodland is scheduled to finish the regular season Friday against Seymour.

Golf

Woodland narrowly missed out on a pair of big victories to start this week as the Hawks fell to Watertown by two strokes and Holy Cross by six strokes. On Tuesday at Western Hills, all four Hawks shot under 50 to record a team total of 182, which was just short of Holy Cross’ 176. Mike Erickson led the way with a 39 while Owen Harris (47), Ryan Warner (47) and Andy O’Dell (49) all remained competitive. On Monday, Woodland suffered a 191-193 defeat to Watertown at Crestbrook Park. Warner’s 42 earned him the medal, while Erickson (43), Harris (54) and O’Dell (54) rounded out the scoring. Woodland (7-7) fell to St. Paul 189-181 Thursday. The Hawks will visit Naugatuck on Monday at Hop Brook.

Naugy Notes

Boys Tennis

Naugy ran its winning streak to six with a pair of close wins to start the week. Naugatuck earned a 6-3 win at Watertown on Monday before pulling out a 5-4 victory over Crosby on Tuesday. Against the Indians, the ‘Hounds picked up singles wins with Mike Popescu, Yun Chao Chen, Jeff Hensley, Jake Morrissey, Yun Yue Chen and Nick Hernandez to clinch the match. Popescu, Yun Chao Chen, Morrissey, Hernandez and Tyler Posser also gained singles victories against the Bulldogs to seal that win. Naugy (13-3) beat Sacred Heart on Thursday. The Greyhounds will visit Torrington on Monday and host their final match Tuesday against Holy Cross.

Girls Tennis

Naugatuck had no problems in its only meet of the week, shutting out Wilby on Tuesday. Hannah Kim, Kayla Gallant and Mikaela Santo earned singles wins while the doubles teams of Kayla Rotatori-Liz Perez and Juniper Glidden-Edesiri Igbuya gained victories. Naugy also took a pair of wins by forfeit to account for the 7-0 margin. The Greyhounds (11-1) have won eight in a row and will close the week with matches at Wolcott on Thursday, after press time, at Sacred Heart on Friday and at home against Kennedy on Saturday. Naugy will also host home matches Monday against Torrington, Tuesday against Sacred Heart and Wednesday against Ansonia.

Naugy suffered a 166-177 defeat to Wolcott at Farmingbury Hills on Tuesday despite solid outings by Nick Tribanas (41), Tyler Sounanthanum (42), Brendan Waldron (47) and Jake Alcorace (47). Tribanas carded a 42 to lead the way while Waldron shot a 46, Dan Capone posted a 47 and Sounanthanam fired a 48. Naugy fell, 188-185, to Sacred Heart on Thursday. The Greyhounds  return home to face Woodland on Monday. The ‘Hounds will also be at Watertown on Tuesday.
