BEACON FALLS — If a strong ending of one season can be a springboard into the next, then the Woodland girls basketball team will be in good shape next winter.

The Hawks finished their season by winning three of their last four games, including both of their last two. It wasn’t enough to help Woodland (6-14) make the postseason, but the team that returns four starters next year now have something to build upon for the next campaign.

Woodland entered its last four games with a 3-13 record but reeled off some of its best performances in the last two weeks. The Hawks earned a 49-29 home win over Ansonia on Feb. 7 before suffering a 44-21 loss at Watertown on Feb. 11. Woodland rebounded to knock off Seymour 31-24 on senior night Feb. 12 before ending the season with a 43-32 win at Derby last Thursday.

Against the Red Raiders, Becky Hale scored a game-high 16 points. Beneath her, the Hawks featured a balanced scoring attack with Cameron Caswell (nine points), Carla Piccolo (seven), Andrea Piccolo (six) and Jenna Pannone (five) all chipping in. Caswell and Hale each buried two 3-pointers in the game.

Andrea Piccolo and Erika Tyrrell will be Woodland’s two graduation losses. Piccolo was a four-year starter who finished just short of joining the 1,000-point club. She finished the season with a scoring average of 12.1 points per game, good for 10th in the Naugatuck Valley League.

A full season wrap-up, including thoughts from Woodland coach Jess Moffo, will be featured in next week’s Citizen’s News.
