Woodland logo colorThe Woodland Touchdown Booster Club plans to establish a scholarship in memory of George Pinho, a beloved assistant football coach who died unexpectedly in January.

“It just seemed right that the touchdown booster club be the organization to sponsor this scholarship in memory of George”, said Nelson Abarzua, co-president of the club in a press release. “George Pinho was the personification of Walter Payton’s famous quote, ‘I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field.’ Coach George gave his all for our kids on and off the field and always told the players during his pre-game speech ‘I love you guys.’”

The George Pinho Memorial Golf Tournament and Dinner Dance is scheduled for Sept. 7 at Hop Brook Golf Course in Naugatuck to raise funds to support the club and the George Pinho Scholarship.

The entry fee is $125 and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and dinner at Jesse Camille’s Restaurant with entertainment donated by the band Crosstown. Tickets for the dinner dance only are $35.

The deadline to register is Aug. 5 and the tournament is limited to 84 golfers. A rain date is scheduled for Sept. 28.

“George’s memory and promise lives on through us. It’s up to us to carry his message, ‘I’ll be there forever, whenever you need me because you guys have given me something that no one else can give me. I love you guys,’” stated Jane Pinho. “The creation of this scholarship is a wonderful way to keep his memory and deliver his message.”
