NAUGATUCK — Students at City Hill Middle School will have the option of two new sports next year.

The Board of Education, during its meeting this month, approved creating boys and girls soccer teams and a track team at the seventh- and eighth-grade school.

“As you know we’re a thriving soccer town and we have a middle school that doesn’t have a program,” Tom Pompei, athletic director, told the board during the meeting.

Pompei said both soccer teams could be outfitted for approximately $2,000. It would cost the board approximately $2,000 for busing and $1,000 for officials, he said.

The total cost to start up the soccer teams is about $7,000 the first year and $4,000 every year after that, Pompei said. This does not include stipends for coaches.

Pompei told the board each soccer team is expected to have about 20 players.

Track singlets for the middle school will cost about $1,000 for both teams and busing will cost the same amount, according to Pompei. The schedule would consist of three home meets and three away meets. Coaches and high school students will officiate the home meets for free, he said.

The teams will practice at City Hill’s field and compete at the high school, according to Pompei. All other equipment has already been purchased for intramurals.

The middle school has a $50 pay-to-play fee, Pompei said.

According to Pompei, the creation of the soccer teams will make City Hill Middle School the 10th boys team and sixth girls team in the area.
