Baseball

Woodland is still looking for its first victory after three narrow losses this week. Last Wednesday, the Hawks fell to Derby, 3-1. Billy Alfiere allowed just five hits for Woodland, while Dave Uhl had two singles, Steve Baeder had an RBI single, and Anthony Scirpo singled and scored. On Friday, Woodland squandered a seventh-inning lead in a 2-1 loss to Ansonia. Tanner Kingsley had three hits while Uhl tripled and scored. Brian Langdon allowed just five hits on the mound while striking out four. On Monday, the Hawks fell to Wolcott, 3-1, after allowing a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Uhl tripled and scored on Kingsley’s first-inning sac fly for Woodland’s only run. The Hawks were set for their nonconference matchup at Jonathan Law on Wednesday before beginning Copper Division play on Friday against Torrington. They’ll host Naugatuck on Monday.

Softball

The Hawks went 2-1 on the week to improve to 4-3 on the season. Last Wednesday, Woodland shut out Derby, 16-0, behind a no-hitter by Samantha Lee. Lee struck out 15 while knocking three hits and two RBI herself. Angie Wirsing had two extra-base hits and scored three times, and Emily Wirsing and Rachel Starkey each had two hits. On Friday, the Hawks fell to Ansonia, 5-4, despite not notching a hit in the game. Lee struck out four and allowed eight hits in the game. Woodland rebounded on Monday for a 7-2 win over Wolcott. Lee allowed just five hits and struck out eight, while adding three hits and three RBI. Starkey had three hits and two RBI and Brianna Pacileo cracked two hits and scored twice. Woodland’s next two games are on the road, at Torrington on Friday and at Naugatuck on Monday.

Girls Tennis

The Woodland girls lost their only match of the week on Monday in a 5-2 defeat at Wolcott. The Hawks picked up both of their wins in singles action, as No. 3 Julia Lawton beat India Trotman, 8-2, and No. 4 Lauren Tompkins beat Jenna Skerrit, 8-1. Woodland’s top seeds, Rachel Mariano and Salma Shitia both put up strong competition in their matches. The Hawks are now 2-3 and were set to host Crosby on Wednesday before visiting Torrington on Friday and Naugatuck on Monday.

Golf

The Hawks earned their first victory of the season in a tri-match against Holy Cross and Wilby on Tuesday at Western Hills. Woodland’s 191 beat Wilby’s 261, but fell short of Holy Cross’ 162. Pat and Andy O’Dell both scored 49, which was tied for the best score on the team. Will Flormann carded a 51 while Dave Hardy posted a 52 to round out the Hawks’ scoring. Woodland is now 1-2 and is set for a pair of home matches at Oxford Greens against Northwestern on Thursday and St. Paul on Monday. The Hawks will visit Wolcott on Tuesday.

Naugy Notes

Baseball

The Greyhounds exploded for 47 runs in three games this week en route to a 3-0 mark, extending their winning streak to five. Last Wednesday, Naugy smashed Kennedy, 17-8, behind three hits and four runs scored each by Nolan Kinne and Zac Mercer. Rich Pimental earned the victory on the mound and also had three hits and four RBI. Last Friday, the ‘Hounds snuck past Wilby, 7-6. Naugy scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, and Adam Neveski held the lead to earn the victory. Pimental had two doubles and two RBI, while Kyle Lopes and Kinne each had three hits. On Monday, Naugatuck crushed Crosby, 23-0. Naugy scored eight in the second and 13 in the sixth. Kinne and Seth Mulhall each had three hits while Mercer and Karl Johansen each had two hits and two runs. The Greyhounds are now 6-2 and were set to host Torrington Wednesday before beginning Brass Division play on Friday against Seymour. Naugy will visit Woodland on Monday.

Golf

Naugatuck split a pair of matches against Kennedy and Torrington this week. Last Wednesday, Naugy beat Kennedy, 185-230, at Hop Brook. The Greyhounds’ Nick Tribanas was the medalist after shooting a 42. Tyler Sounanthanam carded a 44, while Matt Schumacher posted a 49, Brendan Waldron shot a 50, and Dan Capone had a 52. On Tuesday, the ‘Hounds fell to league power Torrington, 165-191, at Hop Brook. Tribanas led the team with a 44, while Tom Karas and Dan Capone each carded a 47 and Sounanthanam posted a 48. Naugy is now 2-1 and has just one match next week, at St. Paul on Tuesday.
