BEACON FALLS — The Woodland girls maintained their position as one of the top-three teams in the Naugatuck Valley League with a 92-82 victory over Naugatuck last Friday night.

The Hawks, whose only blemishes are a loss to Watertown and a tie with Torrington, improved to 6-1-1 with the tight victory against an improving Greyhounds squad, which is 3-2 overall.

Woodland won the first nine events of the meet before Naugatuck salvaged the final three.

The Hawks’ 200-yard medley relay team of Katie-Jean Hinckley, Carolyn Luddy, Chrissy Leeper, and Sydney Corneau finished first in 2:06.54 to give Woodland an early lead.

A string of individual winners widened the Hawks’ margin. Jen Tavares won the 200 free in 1:58.92, Leeper took the 200 IM in 2:27.65, and Corneau won the 50 free in 26.70 seconds before Dayna Chucta continued her dominance of the diving board by placing first with 194.10 points.

The Hawks continued to rack up first-place finishes after the diving break. Leeper and Corneau both won their second individual events of the night as Leeper took the 100 fly in 1:07.38 before Corneau won the 100 free in 58.97 seconds.

Hinckley next won one of her signature events in the 500 free, finishing first in 5:26.80, before the team’s final event win came in the 200 free relay with the team of Leeper, Corneau, Tavares, and Hinckley.

Naugatuck’s victories came in the final three events. Rebecca Doback won the 100 back in 1:13.51 before Maria Carranza took the 100 breast in 1:27.10.

The Greyhounds finished the meet on a high note by winning the 400 free relay. The team of Barbara Martins, Doback, Elizabeth Walsh, and Amanda Miller placed first in 4:14.61.

Naugy rebounded from the loss to Woodland by defeating Sacred Heart, 93-81, on Tuesday at Kennedy High. The ‘Hounds only won five events but were able to win with strong depth.

Event winners included Walsh (200 free, 500 free), Doback (200 IM, 100 back), and Bianca Antrum (diving).

Naugatuck finishes the season with five-straight home meets after not hosting a competition since its season-opener against Kennedy on Sept. 16. The Greyhounds’ next meet is Friday night against St. Paul.

Woodland continues its busy schedule this week. After hosting Seymour on Wednesday, the Hawks will head to Kennedy to face Sacred Heart on Friday. Woodland returns back home on Tuesday to face St. Paul.
