NVL baseball, softball tourney matchups set

The matchups for this week’s Naugatuck Valley League baseball and softball tournaments have been released with all four area teams qualifying for league postseason play.

In the baseball tournament, no. 4 Woodland takes on no. 5 Torrington Monday at 4 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury. No. 6 Naugatuck meets no. 3 Derby Monday at 7 p.m. at Nolan Field in Ansonia. The other quarterfinal matchups are no. 1 Holy Cross against no. 8 St. Paul Monday at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium and no. 2 Wolcott against no. 7 Ansonia at 4 p.m. at Nolan Field.

Both area squads met their quarterfinal opponents once during the regular season. The Hawks defeated Torrington, 8-3, April 16 in Torrington. The Hounds beat Derby, 4-1, April 30 in Derby. Kyle Georgia is expected to start for Woodland while Naugatuck’s starter is unknown.

In the softball tournament, no. 1 Woodland meets no. 8 Watertown Monday at 7 p.m. at Naugatuck. No. 5 Naugatuck takes on no. 4 Holy Cross at 7 p.m. at Naugatuck. The other quarterfinal matchups are no. 2 Wolcott against no. 7 Ansonia at 7 p.m. at Wolcott and no. 3 Seymour against no. 6 Torrington at 4 p.m. at Wolcott.

Both Woodland and Naugy faced their quarterfinal opponents twice during the regular season. The Hawks beat Watertown both times, 14-0 April 19 and 10-4 May 10. The Hounds fell to Holy Cross, 3-0, in both games on April 23 and May 22.

Katie Alfiere could make her return to the circle for Woodland, while Alexa Marucci should toe the rubber for Naugatuck.

Baseball semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. Softball semifinals are set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Wolcott. Both championships are slated for Thursday; the baseball final will be at Municipal Stadium while the softball final will be at Naugatuck.
