Girls’ Soccer

The Woodland girls split a pair of matches for the second straight week as they were shut out by Naugatuck on Friday, 2-0, before bouncing back with a tight, 2-1 victory over Wolcott Tuesday. The Hawks kept the Hounds close throughout, with a scoreless tie at the half before Naugy was able to pull away in the second. Freshman Alma Rizvani stopped 11 shots as she continued to have a solid rookie year in goal for the Black and Gold. Woodland rebounded Tuesday afternoon against Wolcott, though, with a last-second victory. Junior Raven Palmerie took charge for the Hawks, scoring both goals for her team, including the game-winner as the horn sounded. Freshman Alaina Neddermann fired a pass to Palmerie with 10 seconds left, allowing Palmerie to beat Wolcott goalie Rebecca Darley to give Woodland its fifth win of the year. Rebecca Bock made seven saves for the Hawks, now 5-4-1. More importantly, though, the game used pink balls as part of Ally Negaro’s senior project, promoting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Negaro’s project raised over $400.

Volleyball

After losing their first match of the season last Monday to Seymour, the Hawks have reeled off three straight sweeps to move to 10-1 on the season. Woodland dominated Ansonia last Wednesday, taking an easy 25-17, 25-15, 25-16 victory. The Black and Gold was paced by senior Steph Badale (nine kills, two blocks), junior Jess Patrizi (15 assists, three aces), senior Erika Barnett (three blocks, three kills), senior Emily Hutvagner (six kills, two blocks), and senior Lindsey Wirsing (two aces, four digs). The Hawks then hit the road for a pair of matches, starting with a 3-0 blasting of Wilby on Friday followed by a 25-17, 25-13, 25-23 win in Wolcott Tuesday. Once again, the leaders against the Eagles included Badale (10 kills, 11 points), Patrizi (21 assists, 14 points, two aces, three kills), Hutvagner (nine kills, two blocks), and senior Desire Duby (17 points, four aces, four digs, two kills). The Hawks remain in a three-way tie at the top of the Naugatuck Valley League standings, knotted with Kennedy and Seymour, both 10-1. Woodland starts a three-match homestand Wednesday, including clashes with Crosby, St. Paul, and Watertown before traveling to Holy Cross next Wednesday.
