Volleyball

Woodland completed another dominant week on the court, sweeping all three of its home matches to improve to 13-1 and remain in a three-way tie atop the Naugatuck Valley League’s overall standings. The Hawks overwhelmed Crosby last Wednesday, 25-14, 25-5, 26-24. The Black and Gold were led by junior Jess Patrizi (16 assists, nine aces, five kills) and seniors Erika Barnett (nine kills, five assists) and Kaiti Lembo (six kills, two aces). Woodland also had little trouble handling St. Paul Friday, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-11. Once again it was Patrizi leading the way with 23 assists, six aces, and seven digs, while seniors Emily Hutvagner and Steph Badale (seven kills each) and Desiree Duby (six kills, six assists) also paced the Hawks. Woodland finished the week strongly on Monday with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 win over Watertown. Patrizi (31 assists, six digs, six aces), Badale (14 kills, five digs), and Barnett (seven kills) headlined the stat sheet for the Hawks, who finish the regular season next week. After traveling to Holy Cross Wednesday, Woodland hosts Torrington Friday and Wolcott Monday before finishing at Seymour next Wednesday, which should decide the Brass Division champion.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Hawks enjoyed a successful week in the pool, going 2-1 in three meets to improve to 7-3 on the season. After losing to undefeated Seymour last Wednesday, Woodland eked out a 95-90 victory over Sacred Heart in Waterbury Friday. Sophomore star Katie-Jean Hinckley once again paced the Hawks, winning both the 200-yard free (two minutes, 11.74 seconds) and the 500 free (5:43.89), as well as swimming the anchor leg for the 400-free-winning relay team of freshman Sydney Corneau, freshman Chrissy Leeper, and senior Jill Pagoni. Pagoni also captured the 50 free (26.45) while sophomore Dayna Chucta scored highest in the diving event (157.20). The Black and Gold followed up with another narrow, 91-84 win over St. Paul in Beacon Falls Tuesday. Hinckley won the 200 individual medley (2:26.57) and helped win the 200 medley relay in 2:10.12 with Leeper, Corneau, and junior Carolyn Luddy. Pagoni was victorious in the 100 free (1:01.24), while Leeper won the 500 free (6:03.54), Chucta captured diving (178.00), and the 200 free relay team of freshman Emily Trumbley, juniors Emily Soulier and Chloe Flanagan, and senior Sara Hughes won in 2:06.61.
