Volleyball

The Greyhounds continued their strong start, picking up three wins last week to improve to 5-1. Wednesday at Ansonia, Naugatuck pulled out a 3-1 win, led by Jessica Webber (24 points, four aces, six kills, two blocks), Alexis Granahan (six kills, seven points, four aces), and Lindsay Witkoski (16 points, five aces, 22 assists). The Hounds followed up with a 3-0 sweep over Holy Cross on Friday. Witkoski posted a double-double with 13 points and 19 assists, while Catie Garrett tallied 20 points, and Granahan made 12 kills. Monday, Naugy rallied from two games down for a 3-2 win over Torrington. Renee Augustine led the way with 22 points, while Granahan had 22 points, six aces, and six kills, and Melissa Miller had 8 kills. Naugy now faces a stretch with five games in nine days.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Naugatuck could not make it two swimming wins in a row last Saturday, as they lost at Watertown, 97-80. The meet was mostly dominated by the Indians—Naugy was only able to capture three races and the diving event. Melissa Uva’s 145.35-point performance in the diving portion of the meet won her the event. Other winners for the Hounds included Rebecca Doback in the 100 backstroke (1:19.12), Sarah Konops in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.93), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Leah Grabowski, Morgan Russo, Konops, and Nicolle Javins (4:22.81). Naugy now holds a 1-1 record heading into Friday night’s meet at Seymour.

Cross Country

The Naugy cross country teams continued their solid performances Tuesday in a dual meet against Wolcott and Crosby at Montoe Park in Waterbury. The girls split the meet, narrowly losing, 27-29, to Wolcott while easily handling Crosby, 19-41. In usual fashion, the Hounds’ Rosa Moriello dominated the race, finishing a full two-and-a-half minutes ahead of her nearest competitor, with a time of 17:44. The other two top-ten finishers for the Garnet and Grey were Beck Renzoni (21:28) and Samantha Hilsi (23:15). Meanwhile, the boys stayed perfect, edging Wolcott, 27-28, and dominating Crosby, 15-50. Nick Moriello was the top finisher for the Greyhounds, completing the course in 16:29, good for second. Naugy also placed three other runners in the top ten—Ralph Ligouri (eighth-17:24), Erik DeSousa (ninth-17:25), and Tom Mashia (tenth-17:25). The girls are now 2-2, while the boys are 4-0. The next league meet for the Hounds is Tuesday, when they host Torrington, Watertown, St. Paul, and Kennedy.
