NAUGATUCK — Three borough schools were recognized by the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN) for student achievement.

ConnCAN is a statewide education advocacy organization dedicated to closing the state’s achievement gap. Each year, the organization ranks the state’s public schools and school districts on their student’s academic performance in five categories — performance gains, low-income student performance, black student performance, Hispanic student performance, and overall school improvement.

This year, Western, Cross Street Intermediate, and Hillside Intermediate schools each made one of ConnCAN’s top 10 lists.

Western and Hillside Intermediate made the top 10 for performance gains.

Western ranked third in performance gains among public elementary schools in the state with a 24.2 percent change in the number of students scoring at or above goal on the Connecticut Mastery Test from 2010 to 2011.

Hillside Intermediate ranked third in performance gains among public middle schools in the state with a 12 percent change in the number of students scoring at or above goal on the Connecticut Mastery Test from 2010 to 2011.

Cross Street Intermediate ranked tenth in Hispanic student performance among public middle schools in the state with 73.8 percent of Hispanic students scoring at or above goal.
