FITCHBURG, Mass. — Virginia H. Smith, 80, died peacefully on Sept. 28, 2019 at UMass Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster. For the past 20 years, Virginia lived in Fitchburg with Stephen Milligan, her loving partner of 37 years.

Virginia was born on May 11, 1939 in New Haven, Conn., daughter of the late Harold Hadlock and Virginia Leary. Ginny was raised in New Haven, graduated from Hillhouse High School and worked as a secretary for 10 years at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Ginny loved motorcycle rides, antique hunting and playing billiards with Stephen. She was a talented chrocheter, embroider and sketcher, which she lovingly bestowed on family members, friends and various charities. Ginny enjoyed rescuing dolls and donating them to charities.

In addition to her loving partner Stephen, Ginny leaves her children, Peter (Shelley) Smith of East Haven, Conn., Bonnie (Robert) Rentz of Naugatuck, Conn., James Smith of West Haven, Conn., Theresa (Larry) Henning of Seymour, Conn., and Karen (Christopher) Czyzewski of Waterford, Conn.; her nine grandchildren and her eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours, and arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.

In lieu of flowers and to honor Ginny’s memory, donations may be made to the Pat Brody Shelter for Cats, 479 Northfield Road, Lunenburg, MA 01462.
