NAUGATUCK — Richard Louis Garten, 78, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, after a long illness.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 28, 1942, he was son of the late Louis A. and Marie (Bendett) Garten. He was raised in Morristown, N.J. He graduated from Morristown High School and from Lincoln Junior College in Illinois. Richard began his career with Arlan’s Department Store in
Pennsylvania and was transferred to Arlan’s in Waterbury in 1966. He was assistant manager for Arlan’s and Caldor department stores in several cities in Connecticut until his retirement in 2000. He was a longtime fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, and enjoyed watching UConn men’s and women’s basketball.

He married Catherine Mangini in July 1970 and recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. He was very proud of his children, Lisa Marie (Garten) Johnson and Brian Richard Garten and his wife, Tricia. He loved his grandchildren, Elizabeth Kathleeen and Brian Nicholas Garten, and Brenna Marie and Jacob “Jake” Anders Johnson. Richard is survived by his brother, David Frederick Garten of Florida; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Philadelphia area. He was predeceased by his brother, Christopher.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
