NAUGATUCK — Margaret (Walter) Galvin, 100, formerly of Prospect, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013.

Although born Irene Margaret Walter she was always known as Margaret to everyone who knew her, she was born on April 8, 1912, daughter to the late George and Helena (Kraus) Walter. She retired from Uniroyal, Footwear where she worked as an executive secretary for many years. She was brought up in Waterbury, attending local schools, and was in the first graduating class of Waterbury Catholic High School. She moved to Prospect in 1941 and raised her family there. Although she moved to her condo in Naugatuck in 1997, she always considered Prospect her home. She co-founded the school hot lunch program in Prospect Schools, and was a co founder of the Civil Defense program in town. Most notably, she co-founded the Prospect Drum Corps and was an active director for many years. She also always considered St. Anthony’s Church her home parish even after moving out of town. In earlier years she was the church organist and organized and directed the youth choir.

A week shy of her 101st birthday, she mostly enjoyed her family and friends, and dearly missed the friends who passed before her.

Margaret is survived by her children: her daughter, Margot Hayden of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., her daughter, Sandy Schaff of Prospect, and her son and daughter-in-law Ken (Bud) and Pat Galvin of Litchfield. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Gladys Greer and Florence Brandely.

The funeral will be held on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be private. Friends may call at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Hospital, VITAS Hospice Care, 56 Franklin Street, Waterbury CT 06706.
