NAUGATUCK–Mrs. Margaret Koonz of Naugatuck formally of Bomoseen, Vt. and Middlebury passed away early Tuesday morning at the Vitas Hospice Unit at St Mary’s Hospital after a very brief illness. She was the loving wife of John Koonz for 62 plus years.
Margaret was born on Jan. 18, 1930 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Mary and John Maroney. She attended St. Francis School in Naugatuck and graduated from Naugatuck High School. After her children were grown she worked part time at her husband’s store, Capitol Radio and TV in Naugatuck. When her husband retired they moved from their home in Middlebury to Lake Bomoseen, Vt. where they then lived for 28 years before returning to Naugatuck this past February.
Margaret enjoyed being involved in the activities of her eight children, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Margaret was proud of her Irish heritage having traveled to Ireland twice with family. Her hobbies included Pinochle, cribbage, bingo, reading, and cheering on the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. Margaret and her husband John enjoyed traveling to Maine several times a year to visit Camden Harbor and Pemaquid Point. Margaret was a woman of strong faith who attended church weekly.
Besides her loving husband, Margaret is survived by her eight children, Christine Cleveland and her husband Fred Callahan of Newington, Jay and his wife Cheryl of Middlebury, Lynn Kirdzik of Naugatuck, Jim of Naugatuck, Rick and his wife Leslie of Unionville, Kevin of East Granby, Keith of Bethlehem, and Marta and her husband Danny Quinn of Cromwell. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Margaret are her brothers John (Bud) and his wife Susie of Naugatuck, Bill and his Eleanor of Florida and Francis also of Florida.
Margaret was pre-deceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert Miller.
A memorial service will be held Sept. 19 at St Francis of Assisi Parish in Naugatuck at 11 a.m. As per Margaret’s wishes there will be no calling hours and burial will be private at a later time.
The family would like to thank Vitas Innovative Hospice Care for the loving support and care they provided to Margaret, her husband and her entire family during her final days.
