NAUGATUCK — Mrs. Margaret E. (Scozzafava) Mariano, 92, of Naugatuck, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at Paradigm Health Center under the care of nurses and aides as well as VITAS Hospice Care. She was the widow of Nicholas E. Mariano.

Mrs. Mariano was born in East Youngstown, Ohio on Feb. 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Annabelle and Mary (Cretelle) Scozzafava. She moved to Waterbury in 1935. She married Nicholas in 1940 and moved to High Street in Naugatuck. Margaret worked for Nelson’s Pharmacy from 1954 to 1984. She loved her dog Amy and her two feral cats, Sweetie and Whitie.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Gerl of North Port, Fla., Bonita Day of Plantsville, and Margaret Maye of Cheshire; grandchildren, Charles Fennimore of Goshen, Stephen Doughty and Lynn Cantillon both of Bridgeport, and Philip Gianatasio of Emerson, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson, Anthony Mariano.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. The Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck has been entrusted with her arrangements.
